Organizing Your Messy Bookshelves, part 1
If you have recently let go of the idea of the “perfect” room during the quarantine, the one spot in your home that can be “perfect” are your bookshelves. You know which ones I’m talking about. The shelves that hold the TV, the books, the photos, the children’s art projects, the dead plants, the travel souvenirs and the dust. Now that you are spending hours and days staying home, your bookshelves just don't looked quite right, it bothers you. How can you switch things around so the shelves are more functional, prettier, and easier to manage? And do it all on a budget!

First, Remove Everything - Start this process by removing everything that was already on the shelves. Cleaned out, you can now see more possibilities on the shelves and move forward.
Add Baskets - On the lower shelves think baskets, they can serve as any needed additional storage. This way the clutter always lands in baskets instead of piled up all over the shelves. Think decorative woven baskets without lids, because who are you kidding, no one will open lids to put away anything. So use open baskets and periodically take the time to toss anything that winds up in them and are no longer needed.
Greenery - Add a living touch, with a small plant in a pretty ceramic pot (travel souvenir?). Don’t have a green thumb? Look for realistic artificial stems, no watering.
Group Books More Thoughtfully - If you have a lot of books, you should probably consider passing some of them on, did someone say “Little Free Libraries”, to new homes. There are many varied thoughts about how to arrange your books, so go with what works best for you. Here are some suggestions; only using a few books on each shelf, grouping them by them in a balanced way, placing the spines inward can add a neutral look, or try arranging them by color. In the end, spines in or out, you need to decide if your books need to be handy for using or just for filler. Try placing the least used books on upper shelves and use the lower shelves for other special, display books - it will make your shelves more cohesive and connected.
